Vaccine Makers Spring Into Action Over New Variant
Here’s what’s happening.
You may have already heard about the new COVID-19 variant called the omicron Covid variant which researchers say is highly mutated and is affected younger people more easily.
The World Health Organization also said the new variant could pose a higher risk of reinfection than previous virus mutations.
Now, it appears that Pfizer and BioNTech have already began researching on a new vaccine to combat the new COVID-19 virus strain.
According to CNBC, Pfizer and BioNTech believe they can adapt their current mRNA covid vaccine within 5-6 weeks and start shipping new batches of the vaccine within 100 days if an escape variant is identified.
Additionally, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson claimed that they are also investigating and testing for a vaccine to the new omicron variant.
President Biden has recently instituted a new travel ban on South Africa and 7 other African countries as well. This new variant could economically harm the nation even further if it reaches the U.S. and begins to spread.
