Schumer Moves To Bankrupt America
Democrats are playing a dangerous game.
On Monday, Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader and a Democrat from New York, declined the House-approved legislation that aimed to increase the debt ceiling while reducing federal expenses. He also announced that the Senate Democrats would be conducting several hearings on the bill. However, the purpose of these hearings is not to consider the bill, but to caution the general public about its hazardous consequences.
In transcript provided by Fox, Schumer wrote to Democrats, “The Senate will show the public what this bill truly is. Beginning this week, our Committees will begin to hold hearings to expose the true impact of this reckless legislation on everyday Americans.”
Schumer also stated that the Senate Budget Committee plans to initiate a hearing on the Republican bill on Thursday, and urged Democrats to communicate the severity of the proposal’s implications to their respective constituencies through public events and media coverage.
The Limit, Save, Grow Act was passed in the House last week during a Wednesday evening vote, without any support from the Democratic party. Apart from increasing the debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion, either by March 2024 or when the limit is reached first, it would also revert federal discretionary spending levels back to the ones observed in 2022.
President Biden has issued a warning of vetoing the bill if it is sent to his desk, and Schumer has consistently criticized the proposed Republican cuts. The Democrats have declined to entertain any proposal that suggests exchanging a debt ceiling increase for spending cuts. Schumer’s letter also accuses Republicans of holding the nation hostage with their bill.
In his statement, Schumer described the House Republicans’ actions as a hard-right ransom note to the American people. The Default on America Act (DOA) proposed by Republicans offers two options: either default on the debt or default on America, which would lead to significant cuts to law enforcement, veterans, families, teachers, and children. Democrats are unwilling to accept this proposition. Simply put, the Republican’s Default on America Act brings the nation closer to default.
Schumer directly criticized House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, for advocating for certain deficit reduction methods pushed by the more conservative faction of his party. One such measure included the imposition of stricter work requirement provisions for federal benefits.
Schumer smeared Republicans and said, “If anything, the MAGA House Republicans’ actions have increased the likelihood of default. It locks the House into an unacceptable and extreme position that pulls us even further apart. If Speaker McCarthy was a serious good-faith negotiator, he would not have let extremists take him hostage and move this debate in the wrong direction.”
Schumer added, “We cannot move forward as long as Republicans threaten our country with default.”
