Economic Disaster Averted
This was major.
The Senate just passed a bill on Thursday to avoid a massive railroad strike that could have destroyed the United States supply chain. The Senate also rejected a set of separate measures which gave the railroad workers additional sick leave days and to lengthen a cooling-off period between management and labor for 60 days.Ā
According to Fox, the bill aiming to end the potential strike passed with 80 votes and had 15 votes against it. Republican Senator Rand Paul did not vote yes or no but instead voted simply “present”.
The bill will now head to President Biden’s desk for signing.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated, “I am very glad that the two sides got together to avoid a shutdown which would have been devastating for the American people, forĀ the American economy,Ā and so many workers across the country.”
Before casting his vote Republican Josh Hawley stated, “I’m going to vote yes on the sick leave, because that’s what the workers actually want, and I’m going to vote no on the underlying bill because I don’t support it, and the workers don’t support it. My thought is this ā if we want to be a party for working class people, then we’d want to do something for working class people.”
