Americans Forced To Pay Back Unemployment Benefits
Here’s what happened…
In a shocking turn of events, the Georgia Department of Labor is forcing the repayment of unemployment benefits from current and former employees of a local Atlanta restaurant chain after the employer made several mistakes when filing unemployment claims.
According to WXIA-TV, the state of Georgia is asking one employee, Kacey Carelson, who worked at Rocket Farm Restaurants for $28,000 back.
The Atlanta company, led by chef Ford Fry, owns and operates nearly a dozen restaurants across metro Atlanta.
After learning about the shocking news, Carelson stated, “That’s half my year’s salary. I can’t live if I pay that back. I’m a little taken aback by the whole situation.”
Georgia Department spokesperson Kersha Cartwright said there were a number of issues including misspellings, incorrect Social Security numbers or incorrect wages which could result in fraud.
It was not disclosed as to how much the state of Georgia has requested back from Rocket Farm Restaurants employees but the number is likely massive.
“We’re in charge of managing state and federal funds,” Cartwright explained. “So if there were funds that went to the wrong person, we’re required to recoup those.”
Whats worse is that the victim Kacey Carelson says the Rocket Farm Restaurants is struggling to keep in touch with her.
“It’s intimidating, it’s nerve-wracking. The amount of nights I’ve lost sleep, panicked about how I’m going to pay this back,” Carelson stated. “What if they garnish wages like they say. Am I going to jail for fraud?”
