According to Market Watch, Republican Senator Mike Lee and a handful of other Republicans have said that they do want to make changes to Social Security benefits in certain ways.
Recently, Sen. Lee refused to disavow or deny his 2010 comments about wanting “to phase out Social Security, to pull it up by the roots and get rid of it.”
When recently asked about his 2010 comments regarding Social Security, Lee stated, “I don’t recall ever having advocated for dismantling those [programs]. … I don’t recall advocating for dismantling them. I vaguely remember a time in 2010 when we were talking about a bunch of things.”
In another clip from 2010 Lee also stated, “We have to start making some very difficult, some very drastic decisions about Social Security.”
Some of the changes that Lee could want are related to the age of retirement for seniors as well as a possible cut in benefits.
It’s important to remember that these comments were made by Lee in 2010 and Republicans like Senator Rick Scott have made clear that they don’t want to make any changes that drastic to Social Security however these are the facts.
