Republican Says Social Security Drained?

by Market FinancePosted onJanuary 12, 2023February 5, 2023

This is worrisome.

Republican Rep. Byron Donalds appears to have gotten into a heated exchange with MSNBC host Joy Reid over the potential of Social Security insolvency which has millions of Americans very concerned about the future of their Social Security benefits.

According to Fox, it all began when Republican  Rep. Jason Smith criticized Reid over her statements regarding Social Security and said, “Just because someone says it’s not true doesn’t mean it’s not true. We clearly have to worry about Social Security and Medicare. Without a doubt, even the Congressional Budget Office will say that these are programs that will become insolvent if we’re not careful.”

Then Rep. Donalds confronted Reid and asked her if she knew about the predictions made by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and Congressional Research Service which claims that Social Security “is going to be insolvent in 2035.”

“That is not true. That is actually not true,” Reid fired back at Donalds.

“Currently, the Social Security Board of Trustees projects program cost to rise by 2035 so that taxes will be enough to pay for only 75% of scheduled benefits,” the SSA explained.

Rep. Jason Smith doubled down and vowed to do everything in the GOP’s power to protect Social Security benefits and said, “The Republican Party is the party of the working class. We’re going to do everything we can to protect and preserve Social Security and Medicare. We just hope the Democrats will join with us in making sure we’re protecting these programs.”

Smith added, “They love to say that Republicans want to throw granny off the cliff. They’ve been doing that for decades. It is all lies. Republicans want to protect Social Security and Medicare. … The only way that we’re going to be able to fix these problems is if they come in a bipartisan manner, and we fix it, and we’re going to have to do it. But spend, spend, spend is only making these programs even worse.”
