Republicans Drop Social Security Bombshell
The battle over Social Security continues.
With an increase in pressure on President Biden, Republicans are attempting to shift the narrative on Social Security.
According to The Hill, over the course of several months, Democrats have taken an assertive stance on Social Security, repeatedly and publicly accusing Republicans of harboring intentions to reduce the benefits of the entitlement program. However, some members of the GOP are now retaliating by holding President Biden accountable for resolving the impending insolvency crisis that Social Security is facing.
This week, the hearings presented a clear picture of the ongoing conflict, as Republicans scrutinized White House representatives and focused on the lack of a plan to strengthen Social Security in the 2024 budget proposal that the president unveiled last week.
During a Finance Committee hearing on Thursday, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy joined his colleagues in a vigorous line of questioning directed towards Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, which also included inquiries about Social Security.
Senator Cassidy stated during the hearing that out of the proposed $4.5 trillion in taxes, none of it was intended to support Social Security, and questioned why the president appeared indifferent to the potential jeopardy that the program’s funding could face.
In the previous month, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected that the Social Security program’s fund could face a deficit by 2032.
When asked about President Biden’s strategy to extend the solvency of Social Security, Yellen replied that he is deeply concerned about the matter. Cassidy interjected, urging Yellen to provide details about the president’s plan.
Yellen stated that President Biden is prepared to collaborate with Congress on resolving the issue, but Cassidy dismissed her response as false.
“Because when a bipartisan group of senators has repeatedly requested to meet with him about Social, so that somebody who is a current beneficiary will not see her benefits cut by 24 percent, we have not heard anything on our request,” Cassidy said about President Biden.
“And we’ve made multiple requests to meet with the president,” Cassidy said in anger.
