Republicans Calls For Replacing American Workers
This is not going to go well.
According to reports, Representative Tony Gonzales of the Texas GOP is in favor of permitting an unlimited influx of foreign workers to fill positions that would otherwise be held by higher-earning Americans.
In an interview with Semafor.com on April 9th, Representative Gonzales expressed his belief that the inflow of foreign workers should be open to anyone who wishes to come and work.
Representative Gonzales’ proposal to allow unrestricted entry for legal migrant workers is in contrast to his stance on tightening border controls to combat illegal immigration.
Gonzales said, “Just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does … [so] how do you create a work visa program that encourages [illegal migrants] … come [legally] and work and live the American dream through the front door?”
He then said, “This is an area that is bureaucratic, it is so broken right now. One, employers don’t want to go through the process. Two, on the other end [migrants ask themselves], ‘Why would I go through a work visa when I can just come into the country illegally?'”
Adding, “I’ve been working on some [immigration] fixes for a couple of years now. We’re almost there. We’re just about to roll it out. A lot of my attention right now is focused on [the narrower issue of] border security. But I do think we can walk and chew gum at the same time.”
Representative Gonzales has garnered significant support from business organizations who argue that labor shortages should not impede employers or deprive them of access to imported consumers and renters.
One of Representative Gonzales’ top contributors during the 2022 election cycle was the Blackstone investor group. Steven Schwarzman, the co-founder of Blackstone, is a donor who supports migration and has argued that it would be illogical for the U.S. government to limit the employment of foreign graduates from American universities, as he explained in a 2019 interview with Vox.com.
