McConnell Breaks Silence As Economy Teeters
Something needs to be done very quickly!
During a speech on the Senate floor, Senator Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader from Kentucky, accused President Joe Biden of leading the U.S. into an economic crisis and being absent from debt ceiling legislation. He urged the White House to engage in negotiations with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy concerning a proposal to increase the debt ceiling through 2024 while reducing government spending.
In transcript provided by Newsmax, “Firstly, the president said he would not negotiate unless Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans passed their own bill, so they did,” McConnell explained.
According to Senator Mitch McConnell, the Democrat Senate Majority has not provided any concrete plan but instead offered only empty criticism. As a result, he believes that President Joe Biden has two choices. He can either support the responsible bill that House Republicans have already approved and direct Senate Republicans not to block it, or he can engage in negotiations with Speaker McCarthy to come to a compromise.
Senator Mitch McConnell further stated that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has demonstrated leadership by being proactive and waiting for President Biden at the “grown-ups table” for several months. He believes that any proposal that President Biden and Speaker McCarthy can agree upon will have no trouble passing through the Senate. However, any bill that does not meet this standard is unlikely to succeed. Senator McConnell expressed his satisfaction with President Biden’s decision to begin negotiating and invite Speaker McCarthy to the table. Although he will join the meeting, he will continue to support the speaker.
Senator Mitch McConnell, who previously negotiated a deal with then-Vice President Biden in 2011 to raise the debt limit, will be present during the upcoming meeting between President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy on Tuesday to discuss the Republican proposal.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, Senator Mitch McConnell indicated that he does not want to play a significant role in the upcoming negotiations between President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy.
