Major U.S. Industry On Bring Of Collapse
Everything Biden touches gets ruined.
The trucking sector is expressing concern about the significant indirect impacts of the electric vehicle initiative by the Biden administration.
According to Fox, Biden’s EPA emissions regulations have drawn criticism from skeptics, but the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), a trade group representing independent truckers, cautions that these limitations pose a hazardous threat to small enterprises and the broader American economy.
“It’s been our history with experience with EPA that the regulations that they come up with tend to be… not all that practical when it comes to how they actually will work on the road,” OOIDA President Todd Spencer explained.
Spencer is apprehensive that the latest regulations are being enforced without adequate attention to their side effects, and without a thorough evaluation of potential consequences, including expenses and productivity.
Spencer explained, “It’s one thing if you’re talking about doing this on an automobile, that if you don’t get where you’re needing to go quite as quickly as you could, it’s no big deal. There’s no ramifications generally beyond you. But for truckers, it can mean that they don’t make deliveries, that the goods that they’re transporting don’t get where they’re needed to go, and certainly in many instances, people really need to have the stuff that trucks bring on a timely basis.”
As a part of its wide-ranging climate program and push for electric vehicle (EV) adoption among Americans, the Biden administration introduced strict regulations for tailpipe emissions on Wednesday.
The newly implemented tailpipe emissions regulations will have an impact on both light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. The updated standards, which target heavy-duty trucks, seek to lower carbon emissions for such vehicles starting from the model year 2027.
As per the EPA, the transportation sector contributes to 27% of the entire greenhouse gas emission, with heavy-duty vehicles accounting for a quarter of that figure. By imposing stricter regulations on such trucks, the EPA anticipates that the U.S. can prevent nearly 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
Spencer stated that previous EPA regulations have led to a significant increase in expenses related to equipment and operations in the past. Additionally, they have the potential to impair reliability, which could be harmful to the supply chain as a whole.
The EPA has acknowledged that manufacturers will bear a significant cost of around $6 billion, which includes almost $3 billion in cost reductions through the Inflation Reduction Act. It is predicted that companies will have to spend thousands of dollars to acquire zero-emission vehicles (ZEV).
Spencer warned that for small businesses, any issues that arise and cause downtime, ranging from a few days to several weeks, could quickly lead to business failure. He expressed concerns that the new regulations could have a similar or potentially more significant impact on the operations of small business truckers.
President Biden and his administration is pushing for very drastic decisions without taking into account all of the negative factors which could arise from his green energy push. Hopefully Biden does not further destroy America’s supply chain and the American work industry.
