According to a statement posted on the official website of the agency, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is in the process of recruiting specialized agents who are authorized to carry guns and make arrests. These positions are open in all 50 states of the United States.

According to Fox, the Criminal Investigation (CI) division, which is the law enforcement branch of the IRS, is currently seeking applicants for the position of special agent in all 50 states. These IRS special agents, who work within the CI division, are the only employees of the IRS who are legally permitted to carry and utilize firearms. Their primary responsibility is to investigate financial crimes, including but not limited to money laundering, tax-related identity theft, and activities associated with financing terrorism.

According to the “major duties” section in the job posting, special agents are expected to carry firearms and be ready to defend themselves and others from physical attacks without warning. In life-threatening situations, agents are authorized to use firearms, and they must be willing to use force, which may include deadly force, if necessary.

Moreover, in addition to carrying firearms and using force when needed, IRS-CI special agents are expected to be prepared and willing to participate in risky activities such as arrests, execution of search warrants, and other dangerous assignments. It is also necessary for them to maintain a high level of physical fitness to respond effectively to life-threatening situations that may arise while performing their job duties.

Prospective candidates must fulfill several other requirements as well, such as being a citizen of the United States, having attained the age of 21 at the time of completing the training academy, and being no older than 37 at the time of appointment.

Individuals aspiring to become special agents with the Criminal Investigation (CI) division of the IRS must be able to clear pre-employment medical and tax exams. Moreover, they are required to pass a drug test and must be legally permitted to possess firearms.
